Band of The Day Interview – Simple Radicals

Happy Sunday everyone! It’s time to meet another artist in our Band of The Day Interviews! We welcome Simple Radicals to Almost Anything Music today. Let’s dive straight into it!

If could introduce yourselves for us, who are you?

I’m John Malkin, Vocalist/guitarist for the Chicago-based band, The Simple Radicals.

2.     How did you all meet?

I developed the concept and wrote the songs for the “New Revolution” album (https://open.spotify.com/album/4rgBmqnv7h3p5gYPGjiXfU) and began laying down the construct of the songs in my home studio. My fellow Radical, John Griffin and I played in many bands over the years and I reached out to him on Facebook and asked if he would listen to the tracks and consider laying down the leads. He loved the tracks and laid down some absolute incredible shreds and The Simple Radicals were formed. We then brought in our drummer Griff Johnson and bass player James Page to lay down their tracks.

3.     How long have you been playing?

We officially formed the band in 2019. I actually started out as a drummer earlier in life and then moved to guitar.

4.     What three words would you use to describe the music you play?

Retro. Alt. Classic-rock-sound. (Ok, I cheated).

5.     What are your musical influences?

Eddie Vedder is my musical hero. I’m mesmerized with his writing and try to capture the messaging, passion and energy that he does in his songs. If I can even come within a million miles of that I’d consider it a success. Other bands that have influenced us include Foo Fighters, Cheap Trick, Pink Floyd, Green Day, and Tom Petty. If you like the sounds of those bands then I think you’ll like our band and sound.

6.     What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

We were playing a festival in the Chicago area and the band that went on before us was dressed in a horrific combination of Kiss meets The Cure meets…I’m not sure. The crowd just stood there in total shock at this sight. Nobody moved. We had to follow that act and somehow turn it around. Thankfully we did. And without any makeup!

7. Being away from the stages since last year, where is the one place you’d visit when the restrictions are lifted?

I’m waiting anxiously to go see live music anywhere and at any time once the apocalypse is lifted.

8. What’s the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

Air Supply “Lost in Love”. C’mon we all need a good make out album, right?

9. What have you been listening to in the last few weeks?

I’ve actually been spending a lot of time listening to Tom Petty. I’m a huge Petty fan and I’ve been paying a lot more attention to his song writing style and how he writes and uses bridges in his songs. It’s a fantastic combination of simplicity and complexity that has produced some of the most incredible music.

10. Are there any releases you have planned in the near future?

We have a lot going on including working on new material. We continue to push our album, “New Revolution” (https://open.spotify.com/album/4rgBmqnv7h3p5gYPGjiXfU). We released a song and video called “Rich Man Wanna Be King” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehjT9RZdpe4) which provides a scathing lampoon of ex-President Trump. It was just released on YouTube and it’s already racked up 190,000 views and climbing. We’re about to release a wicked cover version of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” where we collaborated with an incredible husband/wife team called Che-Val. We recently released a quarantine video to our song “The Optimist” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJkzHY77WD8). And we just released a podcast called “Music & A Brew” where we crack open a cold one with our favorite musical artists. Our first show featured Kenny Aronoff (drummer for John Mellencamp, Paul McCartney, Smashing Pumpkins  and tons of more) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1np3s_EoBA&t=2111s. Our next show features Todd Sucherman, drummer for the band Styx.

Adams Traktir Release New Single ‘Noth’en’

Adams Traktor, the music project created by JR Smith from Seattle, WA. that captures the alt rock grunge era, is back with a new and powerful single, “Noth’en”, out January 29, 2021. It’s the follow-up to his well-received song “Time To Wake Up” from his Quench album on Dark Spark Music and The Orchard.

Adams Traktor is JR smith (guitar, vocals), Manny Elias (drums), Fernando Saunders (bass), Gregory Darling (keyboards) and Olda Kreycoves (lead guitar).

Smith says, “Noth’en was meant to explore the emptiness you experience when you are faced with loss. The loss of a relationship, a friendship, a loved one or anything you cared about or valued. It’s that moment of despair and emptiness when you realize it’s gone and how much you truly valued it. There is nothing to say, but knowing there was more to be said and wishing you had. The very point where you feel the regret, the silence inside, the loss; the point that you are left with…. “Noth’en”.

In addition, Smith says, “This song was written the week Chris Cornell died, it’s my memory of him, my recollection of the loss, the recognition of all he gave; it was inspired by a lyric he wrote early in his career, a lyric that just came unexplainably into my mind. The lyric: “Nothing to say…. We’ve got nothing to say”.

“Noth’en” was produced by Gregory Darling at 2 Lions Studios and written by JR smith.

Band Of The Day Interview – Leaving Eden

Hello everyone and welcome back to the latest segment on the website and that is the Band Of The Day interview. The last interview with Tarah Who? was more fantastic to get us started and I absolutely loved reading that one, I’m going to have have to come back to it as I do with all my interviews because they fill me with so much joy and I hope they bring you, the readers with so much joy as well!

This time around I have the pleasure of hearing from the New England rockers Leaving Eden so without further ado, let’s get them introduced to you!

If could introduce yourselves for us, who are you?

Hi, I’m Eric Gynan, Cofounder of the Rock band Leaving Eden from New England USA.

Leaving Eden Lineup:

Eve Lead (Vocals), Alyssa Bailey White (Keys and Vocals), Jake Gynan (Drums), Eric Gynan (Guitars and Vocals), Rich Chouinard (Bass and Vocals).

How did you all meet?

Myself and Eve started Leaving Eden. We were also in a band with Rick on bass before Leaving Eden.  Jake and Alyssa came later and then Rick joined Leaving Eden as well. Alyssa was out in the audience one night and approached us. I guess the rest is history.

What’s The Story Behind Your Band Name?

So we consider this whole planet the garden of Eden at one point and so with all the deceit and all the corruption wouldn’t it be nice to go somewhere else for a little bit, thus Leaving Eden.

How long have you been playing?

For me, since I could walk. We had an organ which I played everyday.

How Would You Describe Your Sound To Someone Who Hasn’t Yet Heard Your Music?

I think that Leaving Eden Has a quite an eclectic array of musical genres which interweaves throughout our albums. We don’t like to stick to just one thing. We won awards for best metal, best hard-core, yet we have acoustic songs, Pop songs and some really laid-back and mellow songs as well.  Leaving Eden‘s songs are lyric driven with much harmony and Melody. Leaving Eden is best seen and heard live.

What are your musical influences?

There’s a lot of those but let’s say Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, disturbed, Seether, Nirvana, got to mention Van Halen.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

So much. Besides the normal nakedness that shows itself here and there, We were playing at a hemp Fest and everybody was in a circle and people were somewhat naked and painted but this one particular dude we didn’t realize he was completely naked standing right in front of us because it was dark out. Was kind of weird but hey to each his own.

Being away from the stages since last year, where is the one place you’d visit when the restrictions are lifted?

Oh man we have played so many places I think the place that has a lot of character from the past is the Casino ballroom @ Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, where Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin played. Leaving Eden has toured the USA, UK & Canada sharing the stage with hundreds of the biggest national bands in the world including; 10 Years, 10 Years After (Woodstock Reunion), Adelitas Way, Alice Cooper, Alice In Chains, Anthrax, Apocalyptic Review (featuring members of Godsmack), Avenged Sevenfold, Big Brother and The Holding Company (Woodstock Reunion), Black Sabbath (Heaven & Hell), Blackstone Cherry, Bret Michaels, Buckcherry, Chevelle, Collective Soul, Country Joe (Woodstock Reunion), Damage Plan, (Featuring Dimebag & Vinnie Paul) Days Of The New, Disturbed, Dope, Dropkick Murphy’s, Drowning Pool, Five Finger Death Punch, Fuel,  Gemini Syndrome, Gin Blossoms, Godsmack, Halestorm, HELLYEAH, Herman Rarebell (The Scorpions), Hinder, Hookers & Blow (featuring members of Guns ‘N’ Roses, Quiet Riot, W.A.S.P.), In This Moment, Jefferson Starship (Woodstock Reunion), Killswitch Engage, Kittie, Korn, Lacuna Coil, LA Guns, Lamb Of God, Lita Ford,  Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marilyn Manson, Michael Schenker (UFO, MSG & The Scorpions) Motorhead, Mudvayne, Mushroomhead, Napalm Death, Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden),  Nonpoint, One Eyed Doll, Papa Roach, Pop Evil, Powerman 5000, Puddle Of Mudd, Queensryche, Ratt, Rob Zombie, Ronnie James Dio, Saliva, Saving Abel, Scott Stapp (the voice of Creed), Sebastian Bach, Seether, Sevendust, Shinedown, Slayer, Soil, Soulfly, Steven Tyler, Stone Sour, Taproot, Ted Nugent, Testament, The Butcher Babies, The Misfits, Theory Of A Deadman, Trapt, Tremonti (Creed/Alterbridge), Trixter, Uncle Kracker, Warrant, ZZ Top, Nickelback, Skillet & many more.

What’s the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

Well I really don’t own any records do all my listening online or through streaming.  But maybe it would be hard to imagine that I love listening to the old Bee Gees, before the disco era. My father used to love that and we would listen together. Brings back great memories even from when I was a kid.

What have you been listening in the last few weeks?

I haven’t really had the time to leisurely listen as we’ve been very busy recording a new album and video, a 10 song live album and DVD combo and on YouTube and all those other streaming platforms out there. With that said they’ll put the Alexa on and you’ll hear classic rock stations pretty much.

Are there any releases you have planned in the near future?

We finished off one album and released it in May 2020 and finished our next album as well. Our next release titled Fable, Dark Star Records/Sony/Universal Release date: Jan 15, 2021

How does the band flesh out a song from start (idea in your head) to finish (recording)

Typically I connect with the universe get in somewhat of a meditative state and just listen. The songs  are always there.  I will record scratch tracks with every instrument just to get an idea of what I’m trying to accomplish. And then everybody puts their twist on it and we finally record it in our own studio. Alyssa has co- written a couple songs as well.

What do you feel is the best song you ever released and why?

Typically I connect with the universe get in somewhat of a meditative state and just listen. The songs  are always there.  I will record scratch tracks with every instrument just to get an idea of what I’m trying to accomplish. And then everybody puts their twist on it and we finally record it in our own studio. Alyssa has co- written a couple songs as well.

Who would you describe your rehersals?

Typically we have been booked solid so that rehearsals have been at a minimum.  When you’re constantly playing out you’re getting rehearsal daily. With that said and now with all these shut downs of course we will get together. We feel that rehearsal is a time for everybody to rehearse what they already have learned. It’s not a time to learn new stuff. That just takes away from everybody else, so everybody learns their parts and then gets together and rehearses. Practice is on your own time.

Tell us what your favourite piece of musical equipment is right now

I like the new ProTools and the scarlet interface. As far as recording goes I think they’re very cool. I also like my little classical guitar. It’s so easy to play and you can take it anywhere.

What’s an album that’s has a significant impact on you.

I think Sabbath bloody Sabbath. My older brother used to listen to that so I would just put my head against the speakers and turn it up to 10. Definitely not a good thing to do but nonetheless I guess I liked it loud.

Vocalist you admire the most?

I’ve always been amazed by the band Seethers singer. He’s just got such a great tone, great range just the right amount of rasp.

Guitar solo that always gives you goosebumps?

Always loved Stairway to Heaven’s solo. It blends well and is classic. I always enjoy living in the moment, planning for the future yet keeping an eye on the past

Most bad-ass bassist?

Chris Squire from the band Yes, God rest his soul. Very innovative for his time.

Drummer with killer chops?

Always liked Dave Grohl and John Bonham.

Rolling Stones or The Beatles?

Both but first in line I’d say the Beatles. Great harmony and songwriting.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

It’s always nice to warm up with a single malt scotch on the roxx. If they don’t have that then some nice Kentucky bourbon. It’s a good way to loosen up. We also like to go out and chat it up with the people there.

What does performing live feel like for you?

Well it is my lifeline. Playing a show is better than Christmas for me. It’s exciting and such a sharing of the energy experience. There’s always that slight adrenaline rush even now after thousands of shows. That never changes.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you?

I’d love to play with Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey Buckingham of course without him I would not be interested. But not just because of the popularity and I’m not saying that I specifically love the band, I really enjoy the harmony and Melody and the craft of their songs written.  I got some friends in the band Diamond Edge from New England, really good people, good friends, I can’t say enough about them.

What do you hope your fans get from your music? Is there anything you’d like them to know?

Well I believe I said our songs are lyric driven and truly based on reality. Typically, we don’t write about things that do not matter to us. The only reason why we are here is because of our friends who want to listen, so our friends are very important to us new and old.

What concert did you attend that you’ll never, ever forget?

I got to say Black Sabbath where we shared the stage with them was quite surreal.  There’s nothing quite like it.

Best advice you’v ever been given?

An old wise man by the name of Andino once told me that Familiarity breeds contempt.  I never forgot it. And I also have never forgotten where I’ve come from. So let’s say a familiar situation like me taking care of you for a year and providing everything you need then, I suddenly stop for whatever reason.

What’s your most valued possession?

Probably any one of my Gibson SG‘s. Some of them I’ve had for a long time.

Which of your band members:

Is always late? Me

Eats the healthiest? Eve and Alyssa

Is the prankster? Me

Is the task master to get things done? Me

Has a useless talent? Me but I can’t say what it is because people get insulted with simple jokes.

When you’re not playing music, what else do you love to do?

I like to relax and party with my friends. I enjoy staying fit. I enjoy taking time to smell the roses so to speak.

Best band name you ever heard?

Social distortion?

Vinyl records, cassettes, CD’s, or Downloads?

Cds. We still make CDs ourselves.

What song is amazing yet not very popular?

Professions of violence by UFO. There’s a nice simple yet effective guitar solo at the end of the song.

An album you never get tired of listening to?

I’d like to listen to a lot of ELO songs. More so, live videos. They got like 18 people on stage it’s crazy how it all comes together.

What song are you currently obsessed with?

John Lennon, working class hero.

What song helped you when you were heartbroken?

Chicago, feeling stronger every day.

What’s your benchmark for a great musician?

I’ve always been impressed with the musicians that recorded together. Not separately. So back in the day they had everybody playing together and if one person messed up then it would mess up the whole recording so these people have to really be good and efficient.

Single Review – Slowly Slowly – The Level

Following the whirlwind success of their third album Race Car BluesSlowly Slowly are announcing details on their follow up release Race Car Blues Extended Edition, out Friday, February 26. The double album will feature the original Race Car Blues + a brand new record titled Race Car Blues –  Chapter 2, limited to 500 copies worldwide. Race Car Blues Extended Edition will be available at Europe.unfdstore.com

The 12 tracks that form Chapter 2 will complete the Race Car Blues story and come almost a year to the day since the original album’s release in February 2020. Where the writing sessions that spawned the first record also spawned Chapter 2, the two albums now join to form a whopping 24-track double album feature.

Today Slowly Slowly are offering a taste of what’s come with new single/video ‘The Level’. On the release, frontman Ben Stewart shares:

“This song is about fighting your instincts, a head vs heart battle. It’s about not wanting to be swept up in whimsical emotion, stay grounded and be pragmatic about the situation – all while butterflies swim around in your stomach. Look out for the two hidden Springsteen lyric references in here!”

On face value, Slowly Slowly continue to keep us on the edge. While nearly not a underwhelming track, this exceeds the expectations we see of them and keep us hanging on while we wait for the release of their upcoming record. Their production mixed with their direction rivals anyone you can think of in the world at the moment and that solo in the final third of the track will make this is classic to anyone who listens and hopefully will keep them in our conscious for a long time.

Rating: 3.5/5.

Nightwish Reschedule 2021 UK Tour Dates

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Nightwish have been forced to reschedule their UK touring dates.

The Finnish Metal giants were originally due to tour in November and December 2020 as part of their EU tour before rescheduling dates back to May 2021 due to Covid-19 but now they have been forced to delay the dates again.

Amorphis and Turmion Kätilöt will join them as tour support.

Announcing the first postponement, Tuomas Holopainen called the situation “a most unfortunate but necessary move in order ensure everyone’s safety and make the best out of this bizarreness that all of you and us are going through”.

“It’s not for forever though, and The Caravan will soon be on the move again,” he added.

In addition, the band will be without their former Bassist / Co-Vocalist Marko Hietala, whom left Nightwish earlier this month citing a disillusion with the music industry and chronic depression as the reasons for his departure.]

Below are the resecheduled UK touring dates.

November 2021

17th – 3Arena, Dublin

18th – Resorts World Arena, Birmingham

December

13th – SSE Arena Wembley, London

Slowly Slowly Announce Double LP Collection, ‘Race Car BLues Extended Edition’

The second chapter of Race Car Blues was first seeded with the release of ‘Low’ in late 2019, a slightly off-kilter track for Slowly Slowly at the time, now finding itself sitting snuggly among the Chapter 2 tracklisting. Stewart explains that while the tracks on Chapter 2 originally faired as B-sides to the original Race Car Blues, overtime the collection took on a life of its own.

“What we first envisaged as background information that assisted in connecting the dots of Chapter 1 soon became its own entity and has actually planted a few seeds,” he shares.

“In retrospect, some of those pieces that didn’t quite feel like they fit on the original album have served as great stepping stones to where Slowly is headed. Chapter 2 pushes the envelope a little further in every direction – heavier, more pop sensibility and a deeper dive into intimate solo songs.

“This is and has always been the ultimate aim for Slowly Slowly, to celebrate the music we love – anthemic heart on sleeve songwriting – but across a broad spectrum of genres. Having no creative ceiling for this project only pushed that ethos further.”

The announce of Race Car Blues – Chapter 2comes after the release of its captivating first single ‘Comets & Zombies’ last month. Stepping into the New Year Stewart played a string of sold-out Slowly Slowly solo nights along the east coast, meanwhile the band are due to play Live At The Bowl alongside Ocean Alley, Maddy Jane & The Grogans in March, their rescheduled headline Race Car Blues national release tour in June, as well as a slot at Full Tilt Festival.

2020’s Race Car Blues met an acclaimed response, debuting at #8 on the ARIA Australian Album Chart, taking out the coveted triple j Feature Album slot and clocking knockout global reviews from the likes ofKerrang!, Dead Press, Beat Magazine, Tone Deaf, The Music + more.

Anna Shoemaker Releases “Feels Like (1 Trait Danger Remix)

Anna Shoemaker is sharing a new remix of her single “Feels Like,” done by 1 Trait Danger, the satirical electronic side project of Car Seat Headrest’s Andrew Katz. On the new “Feels Like” remix, 1 Trait Danger infuses Shoemaker’s slow-burning indie-pop track with pulsating electro production, elevating the single into the perfect “crying-in-the-club” banger.

Following her 2020 sophomore EP, Everything Is EmbarrassingShoemaker released“Feels Like” in November to praise from Under The Radar, who called it “a blend of pop theatrics and unguarded honesty.” She rounded out the year with the release of “Silver Cowboy Boots,” which received press support from Refinery29, LADYGUNN and MTV, and is currently streaming on Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ and ‘Fresh Finds Pop.’

The 26-year-old New York-based, Philadelphia-born singer/songwriter first made her mark as a Soundcloud sensation with her viral mashup of Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” and Chance the Rapper’s “Cocoa Butter Kisses,” which she recorded on her bedroom floor. The song, which now has over 894K streams, caught the attention of fashion mogul Steve Madden, who signed her to his record label, 5Towns Records. Shoemaker’s debut EP, East Side, was produced by GRAMMY-nominated producer JT Daly and released on 5Towns Records in 2018.

In 2020, with a newly inked deal with BMG, Shoemaker released her sophomore effort, Everything Is Embarrassingas well as a handful of new singles. Despite only being a few years into her career, Shoemaker has already been praised by the likes of Billboard and Refinery29, opened for Julia Michaels and Bishop Briggs, and sold out her own headlining gig at Mercury Lounge.

Devil Sold His Soul Release New Single & Video For ‘The Narcissist’

Devil Sold His Soul begin a new chapter in their highly-acclaimed career, signing to metal heavyweights Nuclear Blast Records. 2021 will see the band release their fourth studio album ‘Loss’, their first with the dual vocal attack of Ed Gibbs and Paul Green.

After several years of silence, Devil Sold His Soul returned last December with a late 2020s music sensation: The UK based Ambient Post hardcore outfit announced their new album ‘Loss’ out on April 9th – their first release under the wings of Nuclear Blast Records.
But the band has more up their sleeve and Devil Sold His Soul revealed the next piece of the colourful mosaic named ‘Loss’.

Check out the video for ‘The Narxissist below.

Singer Paul Green states: ‘The Narcissist’ is our heaviest track on the new record. It was written about the negative and disruptive people we have in our lives from time to time. It’s a middle finger to their unapologetic attitude and their inability to grasp reason or logic. It seems the world has spawned a lot of these types of people lately and this one’s for them.
We started capturing elements for this track 3 years ago during our shows in Japan. Jonny our guitarist/producer, recorded the dissonant warning bells from the train station in Tateishi where we were staying. It’s a really cool memory from our time out there and to have it on the track just adds something special for us, it takes us back to that time and place every listen.
We worked with the super talented Olli Appleyard on the music video for this track. Oli has an incredible imagination and some techniques and style that are completely unique to him, which we love. The main focus was to make the video aggressive, schizophrenic and imposing. ‘Loss’ is a diverse record with many facets, each of the singles we’ve chosen showcases another side of the album’s sound. We hope those who are craving something on the heavier side find satisfaction in this track, there’s something for everyone on this record and we’re excited for you all to hear it on April 9th.”
