Single Review – Meisha And The Spanks -Mixed Blood Girls

Mixed Blood Girls is the latest single from Meisha & The Spanks April 16th 2021 Singles EP release.

On the singles release, they say:

It’s (some of) my story as a mixed Secwépemc girl from the East Kootenays. My dark skin and white features left me open to compliments on my “beautiful tan,” and when they found out it wasn’t, I was “too pretty to be an Indian.” From ballet moms to dudes in bars, I’ve heard it all.

But it isn’t all skin deep. Being mixed isn’t just about appearances and everyone’s entitled opinion about them. My story follows where I came from and where I currently stand, distanced from family and culture and often pretty isolated because of it.

I was inspired to write “Mixed Blood Girls” after attending my friend Smokii Sumac’s book launch. A poet before them, Rain Prud’homme, read their poem, Mixedblood Girls, relating their experience as mixed Creole-Indigenous. I loved it. I wanted to be that brave and say my words, but it wasn’t an easy thing to do. I had to dig deeper than my own story.

In my search for community I think I wrote an anthem. Our full force behind M-M-M-M-Mixed Blood Girls,” I call them hard from the start – anyone who’s been living in between or felt left behind. Anyone who can’t catch up to their culture. Women and girls fetishized for being darkexoticinteresting (NDNyou weren’t expecting.) For those girls who are brown in the sun, and brown in the shade.

It’s got a raw punk rock feel to it that just goes all in right from the start with a triumphant and unadulterated sound you can mosh to at any time. What’s more is that the lyrics have a more commanding presence than any in a song of recent memory. It’s a statement track you need to be hearing right now.

Rating: 4/5.

Enter The Dooming Death Gates of ISCHEMIC’s New Self-Titled Album

Canada’s Ischemic, purveyors of all things gloomy and dissonant are gearing up to release their second album, a self-titled full length that is set to be one of the most crushing albums of the year.

Before the record officially drops on Friday, April 2nd, the band has teamed up with CVLTNation for its exclusive full stream HERE.

The band adds:

“This recording is our most DIY endeavour yet, all production, engineering, and artwork were handled by the band and close friends, resulting in this stripped-down, but unrelenting collection of songs. This album was developed as a response to the more complex and melodic black metal sound on “Stagnation & Woe”. The tracks call back to the earliest days of the band, but with a decade of songwriting & touring experience under our belts.”

Crafted during Covid-19 lockdown, Ischemic‘s self-titled sophomore album is a listening experience that takes you on a trek through a haunted castle, where every corner is infested with isolation and creeping dread. Showcasing their dungeon-crawling doom and sludge riffs, the band has threaded charging death-metal assaults with dizzying black metal.

The intense, raw brutality of Ischemic is recommended for fans of Autopsy, Ahab, and Celtic Frost.

1. Scabs
2. Crawl out of Hell

Sanguine Glacialis Invite You To Dance In The Deep With New Music Video “Kraken

Montreal, QC’s Sanguine Glacialis have a new music video for the track “Kraken” in support of their 2018 album “Hadopelagic”. The band experiments with a vast array of musical styles such as jazz, classical, folkloric music, and Latin music while keeping a very strong melodic death metal accent.

Today, the band is asking fans to come dance La Valse des condamnés! with the premiere of the video for “Kraken” via Bravewords HERE

Sanguine Glacialis explains the song in their own words:

“This is the third and last single from our album “Hadopelagic”. It’s actually the first song that was written when we finished the recording of our first album “Dancing with a Hanged Man”, and because of that, you can clearly hear the influences of the first album and former line-up. It’s a song that we all liked, so we decided to keep it and adapt it to our new line-up. The lyrics talk about a man who goes to sea, knowing well that a monster awaits him, and despite the warnings of the people around him, unfortunately never comes back. The music video is centered on this story, showing a ghost ship wandering the seas, reliving the passengers’ deaths in the hands of the Kraken, forever.”

“Hadopelagic” is the second full-length album from Sanguine Glacialis, following 2012’s “Dancing With A Hanged Man” and 2016’s EP “Pitch Black Sight”. The beauty of Sanguine Glacialis is that their influences shine through prominently in their music, and each song has its own atmosphere, taking from a unique slice of the musical spectrum.

With this album, the band took a huge step forward and fans have been appreciating its mature sound much more than the previous one. According to the band, everything is better on this release and they are proud of the new direction they have taken. There has been talk of writing another album and getting back to live performances in the not too distant future.

Fans of Fleshgod Apocalypse, Between the Buried and Me, and Diablo Swing Orchestra will likely be interested in the genre-bending sounds of Sanguine Glacialis.

DeGreaser Shares “The Cancer Power Ballad” From Album Feat Illuminati Hotties, Potty Mouth, Colleen Green

Miami-based shredders, DeGreaser, shared the new single “The Cancer Power Ballad” from their upcoming album Astrology 101 that comes out April 23rd, 2021. The Alec Jerome-directed music video, which debuted today via a premiere with Under The Radar Magazine, finds frontman Ben Katzman navigating the cosmos while enlightening listeners to the best attributes of the Cancer sign. In true power ballad form, the single starts with twinkling piano before the band bursts into a soaring chorus and a celestial guitar solo. Katzman’s love of classic metal is worn on his sleeve in this second teaser from the album, following the post-punk lead single “Mom’s A Capricorn” that debuted earlier this month.

Due out this spring via Starburns Industries Press (Open Mike Eagle, Patton Oswalt), Astrology 101 leads listeners through a heartfelt crash course of Astrology, giving each sign their own song with a unique vibe to match. The album features hand-painted artwork by Juan Montoya (ex-Torche, Moon Destroys) and appearances from members of Illuminati HottiesPotty MouthColleen Green.

Preorder Astrology 101 here ahead of release and watch the video for “The Cancer Power Ballad” here.

Speaking to Under The Radar Magazine about the new single, Ben Katzman said:
Cancer is known as the deep feeling psychic of the Zodiac. Their highly intuitive nature allows them to manifest the high’s and shred through the lows. Cancer’s harvest their powers to nurture and spread love amongst their pack and what better way to articulate those vibes than with a true Hair Metal Power Ballad! From the soaring lows of a Piano Ballad to the fierce Falsetto’s and Screeching Lead’s of 80’s past, I give you ‘The Cancer Power Ballad’.

Ben Katzman may be known for running BUFU Records (Tall Juan, Free Pizza, Japanther) and his role in the seminal psych-art band, Guerilla Toss, DeGreaser is the centerpiece of his impressive creative portfolio. Over the course of its existence, the pop-metal outfit has grown an impressive following for its dynamic songwriting, diary-like songwriting, and a diverse range of expertise in the worlds of astrology, shredding, and self-improvement. DeGreaser has packed landmark venues across the United States as they’ve toured alongside acts such as Mannequin Pussy, Colleen Green, and Tall Juan. Their sponsorship with Volcom has extended to tours with many of their top surfers and skaters, as well as some of the legendary surf brand’s gnarliest content. The band’s 2018 release, the Colleen Green produced full-length Quarter Life Crisis, was met with both critical acclaim and uncompromising fan support.

In Spring 2021, Katzman will release DeGreaser’s new full-length record, Astrology 101, an uproarious ode to the impact of astrology on his life. While Katzman usually writes about everyday situations, the challenge of creating a thematic album where each song encapsulates the vibes and qualities of a different astrological sign was met head-on during the writing/recording process at Starburn Industries studio in Burbank, CA. Katzman drew influence from artists like KISS and the Ramones, the vibes and attitude of Abba and Klaus Nomi, and even the famed astrologer Walter Mercado on Astrology 101, resulting in a true manifestation of everything Katzman loves.
