Band Interview Of The Day – Bobby MC

Hello there everybody! We’re back for another instalment of the Band Of The Day interview series! Today we switch up genres to the Irish Swing and Jazz! This is Bobby Mc, a UK artist on the rise!

If could introduce yourselves for us, who are you?

I’m Bobby Mc, an Irish swing and jazz artist. I released my first single ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ with London based independent record label’The Animal Farm’ in January 2021.

How did you all meet?

I play with many different musicians in my band. On this track, I was joined by Podge Kilbride on piano and Ville Leppanen on guitar. I met Podge doing a gig together in Dublin when he stood in for me as a piano player. I am yet to meet Ville in person but we got in touch last year through email and speak on the phone and video call regularly.

How long have you been playing?

I’ve been playing music since I was 16. I started in theatre at the age of 11 but I did the half time show at my parents gigs in pubs and clubs when I was 16. My parents were both professional musicians in a band together called ‘Rereleased’ for 30 years. At 18 I started gigging professionally and I have been full time for almost 4 years.

What three words would you use to describe the music you play?

Smooth/Warm/Melodic

What are your musical influences?

Gregory Porter/Jamie Cullum/Carole King would be my three biggest musical influences. Gregory for his warm tones, Jamie for his cool arrangements and Carole for her melodies and lyrics.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

I was doing one of my first corporate gigs and a guy had a heart attack. He just dropped to the floor but he was in the safest place he could be, a room full of doctors. An ambulance came and he was okay but as you can imagine the gig ended prematurely.

Being away from the stages since last year, where is the one place you’d visit when the restrictions are lifted?

The Olympia Theatre in Dublin is one of my favourite venues and I can’t wait to get back there to see a show. It’s a place I dream of playing.

What’s the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

The Michael Buble Christmas Album. It goes on every year and is best served with grapes and crackers.

What have you been listening in the last few weeks?

I’ve listened to Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars new single as well as some Dire Straits.

Are there any releases you have planned in the near future?

Yes my next single will be coming out at the end of April, early May.
