Band Interview Of The Day – Seven Purple Tigers

1.             If could introduce yourselves for us, who are you?

Seven Purple Tigers are Austin Horn from Grand Rapids, Michigan in the US, and Philip Dyszy, Felix Schwer and Sebastian Heieck from Freiburg, Germany.

2.             How did you all meet?

Austin: Phil and I (Austin) met on an exchange year in Krakow, Poland. We were studying law and international politics, respectively, and met through a student band set up by the Erasmus network. We felt a strong musical chemistry and started writing together outside of that band, forming our own which at the time was called “The P.A. System” (and remained so until 2018). The two of us would meet late at night and write until the wee hours of the morning.

We overshot our modest goal of writing 6 songs by the end of our exchange, writing over 30 in the process and playing a few gigs, and squarely decided that this was now our life’s mission.

I had to go back to the states for a year to finish my studies and in that time Phil met Felix while jamming with friends. I moved to Germany to continue with Phil in 2017 and we added Felix and Sebastian to the lineup in November of that year, playing our first German gig together in the spring of 2018.

3.             How long have you been playing?

Austin: Phil and I have been writing and playing together for nearly 6 years now, and we’ve been playing together as a 4-piece in Germany for nearly 4

4.             What three words would you use to describe the music you play?

It’s always changing but for now, emotive, beachy, and song-driven.

5.             What are your musical influences?

Phil: Early on in the Krakow era it was largely The Smiths, Jeff Buckley, and John Frusciante’s solo work. Those influences are definitely still very present today, but our recent work has been very inspired by The Strokes, Tame Impala and Arctic Monkeys among others. We’ve also taken some cues from acts like Tyler, The Creator, Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa, as well.

6.             What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

Phil: We’ve got plenty of wild stories, but off the top of my head maybe the time that a few punk rock kids met us back stage and one of them licked Felix’s face.

7.             Being away from the stages since last year, where is the one place you’d visit when the restrictions are lifted?

Phil: Definitely Krakow. The city has a certain magic about it and it would really do us good to drink that in once more.

8.             What’s the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

Austin: For us there’s no such thing as “guilty pleasures.” We’re still working out a rock cover of Rhianna’s “Umbrella” in the practice room.

9.             What have you been listening in the last few weeks?

Austin: The cacophonous orchestra of car horns outside of our windows celebrating various European Championship victories. Aside from that, we’ve been listening to a lot of Tom Waits, Lady Wray, Alex Ebert and Molchat Doma these last weeks.

10.          Are there any releases you have planned in the near future?

Our next single, “Ignorance Is Blitz” is coming out July 23rd! It’s more of an indie-rock direction than One Night’s Promises’ indie-pop thing, and we’re super excited to show that side of ourselves, too!
