Kent-based alternative-rock three-piece Dohny Jep began as a duo in early 2019, with Stuart and Pete deciding to create something unlike anything either of them had done before in previous bands and projects. With their unique video concepts and mesh of pop-synth melodies and rock guitars, they did just that. Fast forward one year and with an additional member in tow, the group self-released their much celebrated debut album L.U.S.T in July 2020.
After playing just one show together as a band, they had tours planned throughout 2020 to coincide with the release of their debut album, but as the Coronavirus put a halt to any plans of playing their new material live, they headed back to the studio to record more new music.
Following up on this year’s previous two successful EP releases, ‘Smile, it Might Never Happen’, and ‘Shallow Is The Water’, comes their third EP of 2021 ‘This Is Love’, due for release August 27th via Favour The Brave Records.
Recorded at their recently-built home studio and produced, mixed and mastered by Rhys May (Bring Me The Horizon, Don Broco, While She Sleeps), the EP sees the band reflecting on their own personal journeys through life and the many complexities that it has involved; exploring past regrets, wasted time and confronting toxic relationships.
Prior to the release comes the EP’s leading single ‘Two Left Feet’, due for release July 2nd. The track, a love letter to the nights out that are just close enough to touch this Summer, sees the band experiment with a grungy, heavier sound before giving way to their signature pop vocals.
Kicking off the EP rifining their Alt-Rock driven style in a track that wastes little time showcasing just who the band are. With the EP’s opener, ‘Wake.Make.Break the power hungry guitar and large sounding atmosphere pairs perfectly with the rock progressions and is cathartic to a t. For me as well, the track sounds as of it’s a cross of ‘The Safety Dance’ (Men Without Hats) and ‘Shh!’ (Stand Atlantic) but it’s a huge track which is just so fun to listen to.
Moving straight into TWO LEFT FEET, it’s a dial up to eleven with he more vicious rock track and complete left turn from the opener. This is the stuff some mosh pits were made of which feels relentless in parts where it’s melodic approach is solid.
Heading into ‘I’M BORED’, you can tell the band have taken a more dark and brooder spin of things where you’re taken for a loop which just makes it all the more exciting to be listening to. Everything they’re doing just adds another layer to the bands sound with the stomping guitars and more punk progression adds passion to the band and have a soundscape any band would be proud of.
Lastly for ‘LIVING THE DREAM’ it just gets straight into things. More credit to the band, there’s not been a rise and fall aspect to the EP too much but when it does happen it just immediately goes right back to the best of things, especially where the acoustic in the track fit in so perfectly it contrasts the harder parts of the track to leave you quite astonished.
Dohny Jep continue to keep their heads above ground and outdo themselves on their latest effort where it’s some of the best material of theirs to date and we cannot wait to hear more.
Rating:4/5.
