EP Review – Dohny Jep – This Is Live

Kent-based alternative-rock three-piece Dohny Jep began as a duo in early 2019, with Stuart and Pete deciding to create something unlike anything either of them had done before in previous bands and projects. With their unique video concepts and mesh of pop-synth melodies and rock guitars, they did just that.  Fast forward one year and with an additional member in tow, the group self-released their much celebrated debut album L.U.S.T in July 2020.

After playing just one show together as a band, they had tours planned throughout 2020 to coincide with the release of their debut album, but as the Coronavirus put a halt to any plans of playing their new material live, they headed back to the studio to record more new music.

Following up on this year’s previous two successful EP releases, ‘Smile, it Might Never Happen’, and ‘Shallow Is The Water’, comes their third EP of 2021 ‘This Is Love’, due for release August 27th via Favour The Brave Records.

Recorded at their recently-built home studio and produced, mixed and mastered by Rhys May (Bring Me The Horizon, Don Broco, While She Sleeps), the EP sees the band reflecting on their own personal journeys through life and the many complexities that it has involved; exploring past regrets, wasted time and confronting toxic relationships.

Prior to the release comes the EP’s leading single ‘Two Left Feet’, due for release July 2nd. The track, a love letter to the nights out that are just close enough to touch this Summer, sees the band experiment with a grungy, heavier sound before giving way to their signature pop vocals.

Kicking off the EP rifining their Alt-Rock driven style in a track that wastes little time showcasing just who the band are. With the EP’s opener, ‘Wake.Make.Break the power hungry guitar and large sounding atmosphere pairs perfectly with the rock progressions and is cathartic to a t. For me as well, the track sounds as of it’s a cross of ‘The Safety Dance’ (Men Without Hats) and ‘Shh!’ (Stand Atlantic) but it’s a huge track which is just so fun to listen to.

Moving straight into TWO LEFT FEET, it’s a dial up to eleven with he more vicious rock track and complete left turn from the opener. This is the stuff some mosh pits were made of which feels relentless in parts where it’s melodic approach is solid.

Heading into ‘I’M BORED’, you can tell the band have taken a more dark and brooder spin of things where you’re taken for a loop which just makes it all the more exciting to be listening to. Everything they’re doing just adds another layer to the bands sound with the stomping guitars and more punk progression adds passion to the band and have a soundscape any band would be proud of.

Lastly for ‘LIVING THE DREAM’ it just gets straight into things. More credit to the band, there’s not been a rise and fall aspect to the EP too much but when it does happen it just immediately goes right back to the best of things, especially where the acoustic in the track fit in so perfectly it contrasts the harder parts of the track to leave you quite astonished.

Dohny Jep continue to keep their heads above ground and outdo themselves on their latest effort where it’s some of the best material of theirs to date and we cannot wait to hear more.

Rating:4/5.

Band Interview Of The Day – Slomo Casino

Hello everybody and welcome to the Band Interview of The Day segment! We’re back with two mates who just love making music together. Let’s dive into their time together and what they’re getting up to!

If could introduce yourselves for us, who are you?

We are a couple of idiots who make indie/Pop Soul music, from Manchester. Striving for catchy singable melodies inspired by the the likes of The Bee Gees, ELO and Jeff Buckley

How did you all meet?

We met as housemates while at music college in Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts. Once we’d sussed each other out we realised we had found a dependable other person to skip lectures to play old video games with, fast forward about 10 years and we’ve found a similar camaraderie making music together.

How long have you been playing?

Although It’s a totally new project, we’ve spent years supporting acts like The Libertines, Feeder and Mallory Knox, in separate bands. Then about a year ago we decided to take some drunken song ideas we had made for the fun of it into the studio, and it evolved into Slomo Casino!

What three words would you use to describe the music you play?

Bona fide, flavoursome, curative

What are your musical influences?

Jack – There are too many to name but some songwriting influences of mine are Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, Barry Gibb etc.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

Jack – At a show I played in Italy many years ago the venue didn’t have a stage and it was so busy that our bassist and guitarist had to stand atop wheelie bins whilst we played to avoid being crushed by the crowd.

Being away from the stages since last year, where is the one place you’d visit when the restrictions are lifted?

Deaf institute – Manchester

What’s the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

Jack – (Is this the way to) Amarillo – Tony Christie ft Peter Kay

Shameful

Jonny – The answer to this should probably be ‘Sing When You’re Winning’ from good old Robbie Williams. But to be honest, I have no shame and try and get ‘Rock DJ’ more often than not…

What have you been listening in the last few weeks?

Jack- Billie Eilish, Earth Wind and Fire, Doja Cat, The Weeknd

Jonny – Big mixture of Otis Reading, Arlo Parks and Salt

Are there any releases you have planned in the near future?

YES!! The title track from our debut EP Marshmallow comes out on 17.09.21. From then we will be releasing the tracks one by one until the EP comes out 12.11.21, and to finish the year we’ll be putting out some covers of our favourite tracks!

Dead Defined Release New Single, ‘Rise And Stall’

‘Rise and Stall’ is the eighth single release for the Industrial/Pop/Rock group ‘Dead Defined’. This project is lead by Vocalist/Songwriter Craig Ewan, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

On the release, Ewan says: “I wanted to go back to my roots on this song, the early 2000’s hard rock type of vibes I grew up listening to. Bands like Three Days Grace, Nickelback, Papa Roach to name a few, and with those influences in mind I set to write a real banger when it came to this new release. I feel it’s one of the most creative and edgy songs I’ve written when it comes to capturing a big hooky chorus and that true American hard rock song structure that was so popular then and now. I’m excited to get this song out there and to hear the feedback, positive and negative.”

New Record From Little King To Release On September 3rd

Little King’s 7th album, titled Amuse De Q, is complete and ready to creep its way out into the world on September 3, 2021. We are all very proud of the hard work that went into creating these 7 songs, and we hope that the final result will speak for itself!

The Little King lineup for Amuse De Q is Ryan Rosoff (guitar and vox), Manny Tejeda (bass and vox), and Eddy Garcia (drums). We were also joined by David Hamilton (cello on 3 songs) & Christina Hernandez (violin on 2 tracks) who played on our last release (Occam’s Foil2019) as well. Very happy and gratified to reunite with them, and David wrote some killer arrangements for the new album.

Additionally, we welcome Jessica Flores, a multi-talented musician from El Paso. Jessica takes the lead vocals on a tune called “How Could You?”Asher Syrinx (Ryan’s kiddo) joins the group on keyboard for a track called “Set It Down” that also features Becca Gonzales on backing vocals and Bryan Bowles adding hand drums.

Eddy Garcia also engineered the record in August of 2020 and again in February of 2021 at our “old new” home, the relocated Krank Studios in El Paso, TX. We then collaborated with Mixing Engineer Daniel Salcido at Command Space Audio who made a huge impression with his creativity and skill. Finally, the great Maor Appelbaum (who has worked on a ton of records you like) handled mastering duties. The cover art for Amuse De Q comes from the brilliant mind of artist Maximo Del Castillo

Here is an explanation of what you’re going to hear when this record drops in September (from Teen Music Insider):

The title is Amuse De Q and is based on all of the things I have witnessed and been inspired by during the Q…Quarantine, Questions, Quality, etc. All The Q!
The themes of these new songs are inspired by the Muse Melpomene, who is the muse of tragedy and chorus. She is a fickle Muse! She makes a couple appearances on this album both as a song title and as part of the album cover. Get it? A Muse de Q? I crack myself up!

Lyrical topics include the isolation of the quarantine and the sadness and mood swings associated with it, sobriety, the BLM movement, domestic violence, physical and mental health and how relationships have frayed during the last 6 months, and more. Heady stuff, and I think all of these topics will be easily relatable. I have said many times that if an artist cannot find inspiration from the craziness of the last year, then they need to dig deeper or find something else to do…”

As always, we hope YOU dig it, too!

The first two songs that have seen the light of day from ‘Amuse De Q’ are “Bombs Away” and “Keyboard Soldier.” Videos for those songs were directed by Nicci Radhe and Vien Nguyen respectively.

Next Stop Olympus Release New Single, ‘The Ignorance Of Us’

“Sometimes when words have failed you, all you have left is to scream. The Ignorance of Us is a reminder not to break yourself to fix another, with the desperation that comes with a splintered connection. The song follows the emotional journey through a relationship that is falling apart, with one side refusing to take any of the responsibility for their involvement in its demise! This song is all about release; the embodiment of frustration, anger and despair all in one massive punch of Anthemic Metalcore.”

– Conor McEniry – Lead Vocals

The Ignorance of Us was the first single taken from the brand new EP ‘Heart, Mind & Hell’ which was released in April 2021.

Mixing the heavy breakdowns and screaming vocals of Metalcore with the intricate guitars and anthemic choruses of classic Rock n’ Roll, the band have crafted their own unique brand of Modern metalcore, riddled with nostalgic vibes that will have you banging your head & raising your horns to the sky!

Matt Gray (Bass / Vocals) says: “The EP highlights a person’s journey through the betrayal and collapse of any relationship and turning to personally destructive tendencies as a means to cope before ultimately giving in to the personal demons simmering at the surface.”

Interview Of The Day – Catching Mangoes

Hello there everybody and welcome back to another instalment of the Band Interview Of The Day!

After meeting at school, Catching Mangoes started playing at local events and festivals before starting on the London circuit. The three founding members George, Max and Dan then migrated to Brighton where they continued their musical journey – playing regularly and recording at Brighton Electric Studios, where they recorded their debut album “Kevin’s Town” last year. While finding a new style and exploring new ideas with their debut album, they have recently been joined by two new members, Louie and Alex on Keys and Guitar respectively and have hit the post-lockdown gig scene again with a bang. Support has come in the forms of BBC Sussex and Surrey, Reyt Good Magazine, Clash Magazine and they have played at sold out headline shows at Hop Yard in Forest Row and The Hope and Ruin in Brighton.

  1. If could introduce yourselves for us, who are you?

We are Catching Mangoes, a five piece mid-level rock band from the South East of England.

  1. How did you all meet?

Myself (George) and Dan met at primary school where we began our musical journey. We then met Max our drummer at secondary school and recently acquired the other two after realising we couldn’t play our new album as it should be with just 3 of us. They make up the quintet with another guitar and keys.

  1. How long have you been playing?

As a 3 we’ve been playing for around 5 years. As a 5 we’ve had 1 small gig so approximately 3 months. I predict we have a good 12 years in the bank.

  1. What three words would you use to describe the music you play?

Weird but cool

  1. What are your musical influences?

Our most recent album has been heavily influenced by 60/70s rock such as The Doors and Beatles but everyone has been influenced by the Beatles in some way right? More modern inspirations include The Lemon Twigs and Arctic Monkeys, especially their new stuff.

  1. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

Someone once took a phone call in the middle of a set. We were playing after them. Think it’s fair to say it wasn’t a great gig.

  1. Being away from the stages since last year, where is the one place you’d visit when the restrictions are lifted?

We are storming the north in October of this year, including both Manchester and Birmingham. I’ve always wanted to visit/play in Manny so cannot wait for that. Friday 8th we’ll be there for anyone locals.

  1. What’s the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

Oof. I have a few James Blunt CDs which I often listen to and never get old I can’t lie. I’m sure there’s a few others out there with JB guilty pleasures but I’m happy to admit that haha….

  1. What have you been listening in the last few weeks?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Jeff Buckley recently – his voice is mesmeric and his version of Hallelujah is surely the most beautiful tune I’ve ever listened to. I’m also a fan of Sticky Fingers who I’ve got back into recently.

  1. Are there any releases you have planned in the near future?

The 4th and final single from our upcoming debut concept album ‘Kevin’s Town’ is out on 24th June so keep ya eyes peeled for that! It’s called Bloom Orlando and you’re all gonna love it I’m sure of that. The full album will be out later this summer in August along with some lovely shiny vinyl so check our socials for them… Thanks for having us see you all soon xxx
