Bessie Turner Releases New Mixtape ‘arrabbiata’

Suffolk songwriter Bessie Turner shares her new mixtape ‘Arrabiatta’ on today via her own Good Shout Records

Falling in line with artists like Phoebe Green and She Drew The Gun (or further afield Soccer MommySnail Mail and Stella Donnelly) in her introspective and engaging indie-rock, the mixtape showcases Bessie’s expert approach towards marrying gritty and dreamy sounds, and tackling Big Themes with a mixture of emotional precision and playful levity.

Lead single ‘It Was Nothing’ – playlisted by BBC 6 Music, and acclaimed by Consequence and CRACK Magazine – is followed in focus by mixtape centrepiece ‘JUJU’. It’s a brooding track, ruminating on the non-linear emotional journey around making tough decisions, as Bessie explains:

“I wrote the track when I was trying to navigate myself through a tricky situation, and I was feeling quite alone but with that space and loneliness I felt really quite free.

It’s about bad vibes, good vibes, all the feelings really. Disappointments, anger, feeling strong, feeling like you might be getting somewhere, feeling like dancing, feeling like everything is going to shit.

To me its biggest theme is trust and boundaries but that might be different for the listener. I like people to make their own interpretations of my songs, it’s always so interesting to see what it means to ears that aren’t mine.”

Whilst the mixtape feels holistic in its construction – there’s also a sense of transience. This is a comma, not a full stop – and it is building anticipation for the story to come. Nowhere is this better emphasised than on the inclusion of momentary closer ‘Ta-Rah’:

“It’s a slowed down section of a song I made with Joe (COURAGE) which you’ll hopefully be able to hear soon. It leans into the future I guess, it’s a bit weird, it doesn’t feel very final, I didn’t just want to make another EP with your standard wham bam songs. I’ve done that before, I’ll likely do it again. But at the moment I’m saving my most precious jewels for the album which is a long time coming – but it’s still coming…”

An authentic approach to her music comes naturally, and results in an all-round magnetic presence – as a feature interview with The Line of Best Fit exposes: “She is honest to the last, and it’s absolutely brilliant.”
