Band Of The Day Interview – The Yalla Yallas

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Band Of The Day Interview. Today, we’re introducing a band which is literally a stones throw away from me in Leeds, UK. Today we talk with Will Grinder from the always Hi-Energy band The Yella Yellas!

Could you introduce yourself for us, who are you?

My name is Will Grinder I play guitar in the Yalla Yallas, a 4 piece punk rock n roll band from Leeds.

How did you all meet and how long have you been together?

Rob Galloway the singer and songwriter in the band had been playing as one man abrasive techno outfit and decided he wanted to start playing in a band, I answered an advert on a local music forum and we bonded over shared musical interests, we were joined by self-confessed bass handler Matthew Dempsey. There have been numerous drummers in the group but Grant Henderson, the producer and engineer of all the bands recorded material is now in the drum stool. We have been playing together as a band for roughly 12 years.

What 3 words would you use to describe the music you play?

Not fucking about.

What are your musical influences?

Iggy Pop, The Stooges, Dead Boys, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Guns & Roses, Primal Scream, Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Unkle, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros, Spaceman 3, Neil Young & Crazy Horse,  Hawkwind, Brian Jonestown Massacre.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

A man crowd surfing in a wheelbarrow at a squat gig on the outskirts of Amsterdam

Being away from stages since last year where is the one place you’d visit when restrictions are lifted?

The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, fantastic music venue with a true community ethos

What is the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

I don’t believe in the idea of guilty pleasures, if you like something play it, tell your mates about it, don’t feel as though you cant admit to liking certain things.

What have you been listening to in the last few weeks?

Kikagaku Moyo, Earthless, Hey Colossus, GNOD, Mogwai, GZA, Beastie Boys, Burner Band

Are there any releases you have planned in the future?

Yes we are releasing our 5th album called What It Means to be Human on Monday 21st June to stream, download & buy on CD. A vinyl release will follow later in October. Go to www.theyallayallas.com to order.

In terms of shows coming up The Yella Yellas will be playing with No Como Crees and Chaotic at The Victoria Vaults in York on Friday October 8th 2021.

Band Interview Of The Day – Tony Benn

Hello everybody and welcome to another instalment of the Band Interview of the day, or I suppose it is the artist of the day as we chat to Tony Benn, a Singer / Songwriter from the West of Ireland! Fantastic to be chatting to this one today! Let’s dive into the chat!

1. If you could introduce yourselves for us, who are you?

Hi I’m Tony Benn, a singer songwriter from the West of Ireland; nice too meet ye all.

2. How did you get your start?

I got my start playing in local pubs in the West of Ireland, then I moved to Dublin, gigged and busked up there for years before touring internationally a bit, couldn’t think of a better start really, not much would phase me after it.

3. How long have you been playing?

I bought my first guitar when I was 15, so 23 years ago and loving it ever since.

4. What three words would you use to describe the music you play?

Cool question rhythmic, catchy, emotive  I hope.

5. What are your musical influences?

I’d think of influences in three categories singing, guitar and songwriting. For singing I’d say, Eddie Veder or Roy Orbison, guitar Ani Di Franco, I love the way she plays, it’s so percussive! Now songwriting is a bit harder to decide but if I have to pick I’ll go with Bruce Springsteen.

6. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a show?

I was playing in a pub in Belgium and a gang of football hooligans destroyed the place. I kept playing anyway and this huge dude hid behind me crying  until I was told to stop because the police shut the place down .

7. Being away from the stages since last year, where is the one place you’d visit when the restrictions are lifted?

Im really looking forward to going to Donegal, I promised my wife we would go someday about 6 years ago, I’ve never been and they say you can see the northern lights in September so I’m really excited about it !

8. What’s the one record you own but wouldn’t ever admit to owning?

I’m a believer that you should have no shame over any music you like but I’d say people would be surprised at the amount of Roxette in my collection.

9. What have you been listening to in the last few weeks?

I’m going through a Simon and Garfunkel period at the moment. I bought all the albums about a month back and I’m working my way through them in order and loving it. For some of the albums I know every song and in others there are these great album tracks that I’ve never heard but are becoming new favorites.

10. Are there any releases you have planned in the near future?

I (fingers crossed) hope to release one or two more singles from my latest album (“If I cross your mind”) before the end of the year, just waiting to see how I can tour around there release.
