New Music Roundup 28/08/20

Hello everyone. I do apologise for not posting in the last week. As some of you might not know, I’m a one person operation on this blog and things just got away from me in the last few weeks where I’ve been applying for more jobs as well as working at my part time place of work so things have been a touch hectic for me at the time of writing. But enough of that real life stuff, let’s get to the music side of things.

Bully’s latest single, ‘Prism’ arrived ahead of the release of their latest record, ‘Sugaregg’ which was released on the 21st August but I had to pick this track as a standout and this weeks first pick of the roundup!

The new record was produced and mixed by John Congleton and Bully’s Alicia Bognanno, with additional production and mixing by Graham Walsh, recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, and Palace Sound in Toronto, Ontario, and mastered by Heba Kadry.

The next choice this week are the British Metalcore foursome Death Blooms. Vocalist Paul Barrow had the following to say on the release of ‘Anger’, the second track the band have released in 2020 and the second since their signing to Adventure Cat Records.

“‘Anger’ is about our fear and frailties and how it’s so easy for every single one of us to project all of that into our relationships and to the people closest to us. We can all become a product of our anxieties and our insecurities; feeling afraid to make changes and feeling so lost within it all. It can become so frustrating existing in this perpetual loop of uncertainty and it becomes all we feel and know. It’s impossible to let anybody else in when we’re stuck in this cycle and, unfortunately, our fear becomes our loneliness. We find it hard to believe, but some people do care and do want to help us. We just need to help ourselves.”

Next on this week’s New Music Roundup, we have the trap metal titan Ghostmane. There’s a new track called ‘AL’, which was released recently and is the lead single from the upcoming record, ‘ANTI-ICON’.

Right, we have come to the penultimate track of the week and a newish artist who’s gaining some traction this year. I present to you, JJ Wilde.

In just over a year, JJ Wilde has gone from paying her dues and playing whatever shows she could to become the first female artist to have a debut single go No. 1 on all three Canadian rock radio formats – while on equal footing with The Killers, The Black Keys, and Billy Talent. Now, JJ is back with a new song that marks the next chapter of her evolution from fan-favourite underdog touring alongside The Struts, Incubus, The Blue Stones, and The Glorious Sons to a beloved chart-topper.

On the track she says: “For me, this song is about trying to change the narrative that society has accepted about women” says JJ. “It is clear, especially in the music industry that women are viewed more like objects a lot of the time than actual humans — seen not heard type of thing. Well, I want that to change – what women “should and shouldn’t do”, what society deems acceptable, what women are shamed for. All of the above. We are beautiful creatures. And I don’t think we should feel ashamed to express that. This song is taking a stab at what men have always been free to talk about in songs — doing whatever they want with whoever they want — but from a woman’s perspective.”

And lastly this week we have the final track as the return of the incredible You Me At Six.

The band debuted their latest track, ‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE’ which is expected to be the lead single of their upcoming TBA seventh record. This track follows on from the release of ‘Our House (The Mess We Made) which was released earlier in 2020.

This release is definitely a different turn of things for the band and if anything’s to go by, is going to be the heaviest record since they released Sinners Never Sleep around nine years ago.

New Music Video Roundup 10/07/20

Hello there everybody! Welcome back to another weekly Friday post of ten of the best recently released music videos and sometimes a little information that comes with them! They’re not all within the same genre and they’re all different in some way or another but that means that there’s a little something for everyone here but come on, let’s get down to the music (videos)!

The first choice of the week in today’s countdown is the progressive metal trio Spiritbox who have their second single of the year in the form of ‘Holly Foller’. At the time of writing, it’s uncertain is the track will feature on a forthcoming EP or full length record.

Seconds up today are the Las Vegas trio Palaye Royale. Their recent record, ‘The Bastards’ dropped via Sumerian Records and their latest video for ‘Anxiety’ is off the aforementioned record.

Now if this is anything to go by, the lockdown is really getting to Luke Rainsford. With his latest EP, ‘World Of Colour’ fresh into the world via Scylla Records, the video for the choice of single is ‘Lack’.

Moving to the Scottish lands of Glasgow, the up and comers Layaway premiered a video over on Discovered Magazine last week. The video is from footage shot by the band at home and footage from the road as well as in the studio plus some of their fans footage as well! Check out ‘Until Then’, below.

Keeping with the Scottish bands for at least one more track, we have the Aberdeen quartet (in a break from the quintets today) Cold Years. Their video for ‘Too Far Gone’ is taken off their upcoming release, ‘Paraside’.

On the track, Ross Gordon, the band’s frontman says:

“‘Too Far Gone’ came from being in a pretty bad place, not knowing what the future was going to hold and being alone. I’d pushed partying too hard and I felt like I was just wasting my time. You get to that point where you just give up trying because everything falls to shit regardless. We come from a small town and I couldn’t stand to be in the same room as all the same people, I just wanted to be alone and didn’t want to talk to anyone.
I needed to release all those emotions from everything that had happened to me up until that point, I guess you have to write these kinds of songs, being in this band is a cathartic process for all of us. I’ve always felt like a lot of the songs on this record were about things that were gonna come in the future, this song was me looking deep into how I was feeling at the time and using it to escape.”

How about some Pirate Metal now? Some Scottish Pirate Metal? Now you’re interested!

The legends of the scene known as Alestorm have a new and crazy animated video for their one minute and a half track, ‘Shit Boat (No Fans)’.

The track is off their recently released record, ‘Curse Of The Crystal Coconut’.

On the track, the band have said:

“Oh wow, everyone knows that short songs are the best songs, so naturally we had to make a music video for the shortest song on our album. This animation was put together by the lovely people at RMIT University in Melbourne, and it features all the classic elements of an Alestorm video: Magical Girl transformations, giant Hungarian men dropping turds on your garden, rubber ducks, and crudely drawn cartoon penises. Enjoy!”

Heading to the Post- Hardcore genre now, we have the Californian Quintet, Thousand Below with not a recent video, but a video off their 2019 effort ‘Gone In Your Wake’. The track in question? ‘171 xo’.

Moving across to Australia for the ever growing Glass Ocean, the band have shared ‘Bolero’ which is off their soon to be release debut record, ‘The Remnants Of Losing Yourself In Someone Else’ set to be released in August with Wildthing Records.

Next, Co-directed remotely with Alan Del Rio Ortiz, ‘Every Tradition’ is Bully’s latest cut off the third full length record, ‘Sugaregg’ for release in August via Sub Pop.

On the release, Alica says:

“After we tested out this method (me shooting alone at my house and sending the footage to Alan to edit and put everything together) with ‘Where to Start’ I liked it so much I wanted to do it again and trusted Alan to turn my mess into a well put together music video. Surprisingly I was a lot more comfortable on my own as opposed to having a crew of people there like there has been for past music videos. I also have a newfound appreciation for any cinematographer because god damn it’s a lot of work.”

Of the song, she adds: “‘Every Tradition’ is one of the most literal songs on the record, forcing myself throughout the writing process to cut out the bullshit and put down on paper exactly what was going through my mind, silencing the paranoia of the different ways it could be received. Some songs just call for that sort of process and ‘Every Tradition’ was one of them.”

And lastly this week we have the growing talent, the badass hardcore hitters whom have a brand new record, ‘Transitional Forms which should take them to new heights and bigger touring houses when we’re out of lockdown, it’s only Pure Noise’s Sharptooth.

The video which they’ve released this week is ‘Evolution’ which also features the storming guest vocals from Anti-Flag’s Justin Sane.

Music Video’s 23/02/18

Did you think I’d forget? I didn’t this time! It’s time for another round of ten great recent music video’s. Let get going!

First up is a great band called Bully and their new video for the track, “Focused’.

Now let’s turn things up a little. This UK group are set to drop a new record ‘Time Will Die’ this year but until then we have the video for their latest single. This is Rolo Tomassi and their video for ‘Aftermath’.

Fall Out Boy’s new record ‘Mania’ has been out in the world for just under a month now but they aren’t shy on the singles. This is the fifth from the record and the video for ‘Wilson (Expensive Mistakes) sees them hosting and selling products on a shopping channel. A little weird I know, but lets see what happens.

After a great 2017 for this British metal group, they’re tipped for better things this year. With the release of ‘Immanentize Eschaton’, there’s no doubt it will be a great 2017. This is Venom Prison.

This next band are currently on tour supporting Dream State but the rising Londoner’s known as Chapter and Verse has debuted a video to accompany their track ‘Magazines’ which initially dropped in November.

Next up, Silverstein have released a fantastic video for their track ‘Whiplash’ which is off their ninth record, ‘Dead Reflection’ which also acts as a continuation for ‘Lost Positives’.

Now, the punk rockers Rise Against have added to their latest full-length record, ‘Wolves’, which was released last year. This is their video for a track off Wolves called House On Fire.

Now every week there’s always a group I’m always following, it’s time for that group. These come from the post-hardcore legends known as Senses Fail and this is their single from their upcoming record, ‘If There Is Light, It Will Find You’. Be sure to check this one out this week! Here’s the video.

Now for an unsigned group. This is from the stellar rockers from Manchester, Counterpoint. It’s from their upcoming EP, ‘If Not Now, When? and its the video for the track, ‘Leave It All Behind’.

Lastly, this video comes from the legendary rockers The Wonder Years which sees their first release of new music in three years since No Closer To Heaven in 2015. Now, their upcoming release, Sister Cities, comes out on April 6th. This is the video for the title track.

Music Video’s 17/11/17

You know what it’s time for? That’s right another music video roundup! Ten of the best videos of the last week and we’ll kick things off of Watford based Group Funeral Shakes with Over You! Some Punk – Rock goodness will follow as the group will release their self titled record on February 16th via silent Cult Records.

Now this band have taken a little break but are now back within fighting force as London hardcore group Feed The Rhino have shared a new track titled ‘Heedless’. This is their first single which will feature on their upcoming record, ‘The Silence’.

Now this band are about to embark of a UK headlining tour, but they were about at the beggining of the month for Radio 1 Rocks (and yes, there’s one of these coming every week). This is Pvris and their cover of Everlong by Foo Fighters.

Next is the electronic hardcore group I See Stars. This track is titled ‘Everyone’s Safe In The Treehouse’. This video follows them on their tour of Asia and their time visiting towns and cities as well as their performances.

Now this is trippy. A warning of awesomeness must come with this intense new video for Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes video for Spray Paint Love.

Let’s go a little more indie accompanied by an amazing video. This is Bully with Feel The Same.

Now, after the release of their latest record, The Canyon, the Used have dropped a new video for ‘Rise Up Lights’. A warning of intensity is in effect now.

Next this pop punk band shared a track a few weeks ago which was perfection. Now here’s the video for Waterparks amazing track Blonde.

And for the pentulimate video we’re turning to Sheffield’s own, Rolo Tomassi. This track got it’s world premiere on Caniel P. Carter’s Rock Show on BBC Radio 1 the other week and now, here is Rituals in its glory.

And now for the final video of the week. This band dropped their latest record last week and now Evanescence have unveiled a video to accompany their track, Imperfection off their new record Synthesis.
