Download Festival 2021 Cancelled, Headliners For 2022 Confirmed

Download Festival organisers have announced that the 2021 event has been cancelled for a second consecutive year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The 2021 iteration was set to take place on June 4th – 6th but the news of the cancellation comes following the announcement last week from the UK government of their roadmap out of lockdown, in which they stated that they wouldn’t allow large scale events to go ahead any earlier than June 21st 2021.

The organisers have since been confirmed that though the 2021 event won’t go ahead, 2022 plans to go forward, with main stage headline performances from KISS, Iron Maiden and Biffy Clyro already locked in.

A full statement from the festival can be read below.

“We can now confirm that Download Festival will no longer be taking place this year. But we do have exciting news for 2022.

We never gave up hope of bringing the festival back to Donington this June and had been working so hard behind the scenes to make that happen, but we now know it’s not possible. We’re heartbroken for everyone in the Download family, from artists to suppliers and of course our passionate Download fans.

We’ll be back on 10th-12th June 2022, as strong as ever, with an amazing set of headliners – KISS, Iron Maiden, and Biffy Clyro.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the NHS for their extraordinary efforts in rolling out the vaccine, as well as thanking all of you for your patience and for keeping the spirit of Download alive until we can be together again.

You are all very welcome to retain your ticket and carry it over to next year. Alternatively, you will be able to receive a refund from your ticket agent. Look out for an email from them very soon and please only contact them if you have not been contacted after 5 days as they are very busy at this time.

Horns up. We’ll see you in 2022.

Team Download”

Download 2022 will take place on June 10th – 12th 2022 at Donnington Park, Derbyshire. Tickets purchased for Download Festival 2020 or 2021 will remain valid for the 2022 dates.

Early bird tickets, instalment plans, and RIP accommodation will also go on general sale from Friday (March 5th 2021) and can be purchased online from the festival’s official website.

Download Are “Continuing To Work” On This Summer’s Festival Despite Glastonbury Cancellation

Following the sad and troublesome news that the 2021 iteration of Glastonbury Festival has been cancelled, Download have been responding via Twitter stating that they are “continuing to work behind the scenes to get ready” for the June event.

The massive weekend event is scheduled to take place on June 4th – 6th 2021, is currently still planned to go ahead though the festival’s social media team have been writing to followers that they “hope to have more news for you by March 1”.

Speaking to the BBC in early January, general secretary of the Association of Festival Organisers Steve Heap said that smaller gigs and festivals would have up until April to make the call on their events, while bigger happenings had to be decided this month. “If we get as far as Easter and we still don’t know that crowds can gather at festivals, however large or small, then we are in a catastrophic situation with this year’s season,” he said.

Announcing Glastonbury’s cancellation yesterday, organisers Michael and Emily Eavis wrote: “With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will be another enforced fallow year for us. In spite of our efforts to move heaven and earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the festival happen this year. We are so sorry to let you all down.”

They added: “We are very confident we can deliver something really special for us all in 2022!”
