Just Friends Get Sweet On ‘Honey’

The cover of HELLA, the upcoming third LP from Bay Area outfit Just Friends AKA JF Crew, is a quintessential west coast dream: fireworks spitfire their way across a starry night sky while below on the warm pavement, friends watch the explosions from their cars, awash in the warm glow. Vocalist Sam “Sammy” Kless says this ritual of nighttime Californian communion is what HELLA is all about.

“This is a record to listen to when you’re driving around at night time with your friends, with the person you like, or just by yourself,” Kless explains.

The crew’s latest single “Honey” is practically begging to be taken for one of those rides. It’s a thick, perfumed late-night slow-burn featuring vocalist Brianda E. Goyos León’s first-ever verse in her native Spanish, while Sacramento hip-hop artist Nate Curry brings an airy, saccharine bridge.

Just Friends Announce New Record, ‘Hella’, Release New Single

Leave it to Just Friends to make being called “basic” cool. The Bay Area crew’s highly-anticipated new album, HELLA, will finally arrive on 4th March 2022 via Pure Noise Records and its first single “Basic” ft. Lil B + Hobo Johnson is out today.

From its triumphant opening and an impossibly catchy hook to the image of Lil B and Hobo Johnson “at the mooooo-vies,” the song finds these Northern California superheroes embracing all the things they love about their crew. In a time where close-knit groups are more encouraged than ever, “Basic” is an anthem about the simple life and spending time with your best friends doing whatever.

“This song happened by accident!” laughs vocalist Samuel Kless (he/him). After a chance encounter during a protest last summer led to Lil B’s verse on the song “Stupid,” an unlikely collaborative kinship began to form and the Based God asked if there were any more tracks he could jump on.

“Basic caught me by surprise, it’s so funny and silly, it makes me laugh and lifts my spirit,” vocalist Brianda aka Brond (she/her) shares. “That’s super valuable for the times we’re living through, the growing pains JF overcame recently as a band, and for me as a songwriter and human being.”

Just Friends Presents JF CREW VOL 3 EP Via Pure Noise Records

Just Friends has grown pretty accustomed to people not getting it, but that’s never stopped them. Over the last year, they’ve been releasing a series of mini-EPs, each featuring two new songs + one complimentary cover, meant to put their variety of influence and range on full blast. VOL 2, released earlier this spring, was an all-the-way-turnt-up love letter to life in California, complete with acrobatic riffage and even a feature from Lil B.

But it’s time for a totally different side of Just Friends, and it’s softer and sweeter than ever. Out everywhere today, JF CREW VOL 3 is an incredibly promising and unexpected display from the group based out of the East Bay. Featuring two new songs––including the Fleetwood-y singalong “Sunflower” and the smooth-talking vibes of “OTIS”––and a surprising cover of a Toro Y Moi favourite, VOL 3 sets the stage for this crew to have the brightest future they can imagine.
