New Music Video Roundup 10/07/20

Hello there everybody! Welcome back to another weekly Friday post of ten of the best recently released music videos and sometimes a little information that comes with them! They’re not all within the same genre and they’re all different in some way or another but that means that there’s a little something for everyone here but come on, let’s get down to the music (videos)!

The first choice of the week in today’s countdown is the progressive metal trio Spiritbox who have their second single of the year in the form of ‘Holly Foller’. At the time of writing, it’s uncertain is the track will feature on a forthcoming EP or full length record.

Seconds up today are the Las Vegas trio Palaye Royale. Their recent record, ‘The Bastards’ dropped via Sumerian Records and their latest video for ‘Anxiety’ is off the aforementioned record.

Now if this is anything to go by, the lockdown is really getting to Luke Rainsford. With his latest EP, ‘World Of Colour’ fresh into the world via Scylla Records, the video for the choice of single is ‘Lack’.

Moving to the Scottish lands of Glasgow, the up and comers Layaway premiered a video over on Discovered Magazine last week. The video is from footage shot by the band at home and footage from the road as well as in the studio plus some of their fans footage as well! Check out ‘Until Then’, below.

Keeping with the Scottish bands for at least one more track, we have the Aberdeen quartet (in a break from the quintets today) Cold Years. Their video for ‘Too Far Gone’ is taken off their upcoming release, ‘Paraside’.

On the track, Ross Gordon, the band’s frontman says:

“‘Too Far Gone’ came from being in a pretty bad place, not knowing what the future was going to hold and being alone. I’d pushed partying too hard and I felt like I was just wasting my time. You get to that point where you just give up trying because everything falls to shit regardless. We come from a small town and I couldn’t stand to be in the same room as all the same people, I just wanted to be alone and didn’t want to talk to anyone.

I needed to release all those emotions from everything that had happened to me up until that point, I guess you have to write these kinds of songs, being in this band is a cathartic process for all of us. I’ve always felt like a lot of the songs on this record were about things that were gonna come in the future, this song was me looking deep into how I was feeling at the time and using it to escape.”

How about some Pirate Metal now? Some Scottish Pirate Metal? Now you’re interested!

The legends of the scene known as Alestorm have a new and crazy animated video for their one minute and a half track, ‘Shit Boat (No Fans)’.

The track is off their recently released record, ‘Curse Of The Crystal Coconut’.

On the track, the band have said:

“Oh wow, everyone knows that short songs are the best songs, so naturally we had to make a music video for the shortest song on our album. This animation was put together by the lovely people at RMIT University in Melbourne, and it features all the classic elements of an Alestorm video: Magical Girl transformations, giant Hungarian men dropping turds on your garden, rubber ducks, and crudely drawn cartoon penises. Enjoy!”

Heading to the Post- Hardcore genre now, we have the Californian Quintet, Thousand Below with not a recent video, but a video off their 2019 effort ‘Gone In Your Wake’. The track in question? ‘171 xo’.

Moving across to Australia for the ever growing Glass Ocean, the band have shared ‘Bolero’ which is off their soon to be release debut record, ‘The Remnants Of Losing Yourself In Someone Else’ set to be released in August with Wildthing Records.

Next, Co-directed remotely with Alan Del Rio Ortiz, ‘Every Tradition’ is Bully’s latest cut off the third full length record, ‘Sugaregg’ for release in August via Sub Pop.

On the release, Alica says:

“After we tested out this method (me shooting alone at my house and sending the footage to Alan to edit and put everything together) with ‘Where to Start’ I liked it so much I wanted to do it again and trusted Alan to turn my mess into a well put together music video. Surprisingly I was a lot more comfortable on my own as opposed to having a crew of people there like there has been for past music videos. I also have a newfound appreciation for any cinematographer because god damn it’s a lot of work.”

Of the song, she adds: “‘Every Tradition’ is one of the most literal songs on the record, forcing myself throughout the writing process to cut out the bullshit and put down on paper exactly what was going through my mind, silencing the paranoia of the different ways it could be received. Some songs just call for that sort of process and ‘Every Tradition’ was one of them.”

And lastly this week we have the growing talent, the badass hardcore hitters whom have a brand new record, ‘Transitional Forms which should take them to new heights and bigger touring houses when we’re out of lockdown, it’s only Pure Noise’s Sharptooth.

The video which they’ve released this week is ‘Evolution’ which also features the storming guest vocals from Anti-Flag’s Justin Sane.

And that’s it for another week of a countdown of the best singles out in the world in the last week. Be sure to check back next-time for another round of great music videos. If you have any suggestions for me to check out, be sure to send an email or message us via the socials on Facebook or Twitter!

Music Video Roundup 15/05/20

We’re back for another week! We have another roundup of ten music videos which have been recently released and they’re always some of my favourites! They’re not all within the same genre and they’re all different in some way or another but that means that there’s a little something for everyone here but enough talk, let’s get down to things.

First up this week coincides with the recent release of her solo debut record, ‘Petals For Armor’, it can only be Hayley Williams. The track in question today is ‘Dead Horse’.

The video for ‘Dead Horse’ was directed by HalfNoise frontman and Paramore drummer, Zac Farro.

Next up we have the British Emo / Pop-Rock musician Luke Rainsford. He’s got a new cut in the form of ‘Tip Toe’, where the video complies fan-submitted content.

On the track, Luke has shared:

“‘Tip Toe’ is about the honeymoon stage of a relationship. I think sometimes with how the world is, it is easy to focus on how tough life can be, but there are the little moments of happiness to be found within the smallest of gestures. I wanted to reflect that in the video, having fans send in clips expressing themselves, their creativity and having fun. I think the world needs that right now.”

Now, moving across to Wales for the next pick this week, we have the Pop-Punk trio in Junior.

Over the next weeks, the band will be releasing a series of covers, including Boston, Thin Lizzy, Death Cab For Cutie, and Alkaline Trio. All covers have been self-produced by Matt Attard of JUNIOR.

Their new video accompanies the track, ‘Where And When’ which is off their full-length record, ‘Beautiful Life’.

Keeping in the realm of the Pop-Punk genre, Aussie rockers Stand Atlantic have released a brand new track this week, ‘Wavelength. This is the third track in their line of releases following on from their debut record, ‘Skinny Dipping.

Bonnie Fraser has said this about the track:

“We wanted to push the boundaries with ‘Wavelength’. The song itself is about pushing your own boundaries and trying to assimilate with someone. Sometimes communication is lost to a point where it feels like you are speaking different languages. Music is its own language and we wanted to challenge everything you thought you knew about Stand Atlantic. The entire record is no exception.”

Moving straight across the pond to Bournemouth for the alternative group Laika who have a new release which is also the bands first offering of new material this year with ‘Our Vices’.

How about some math-rock next? Yeah, you saw it Math Rock!

The Californian rockers Covet have a track which is the second offering from their upcoming record, ‘Technicolor’.

This also marks the first track to come from the band which features vocals and not entirely be instrumental.

Yvette Young (vocals) shares what the track, ‘Parachute’ means to her.

“This track, ‘Parachute’, is really special to me. I remember I wrote it basically in one sitting and immediately I heard that it needed lyrics. My whole rule for writing is to never rule anything out, as long as it serves the music… so here we are, at Covet’s first departure from being instrumental. The song is about taking a risk for yourself and stepping away from something or something that once made you feel safe, only to realise that you never needed any of it in the first place. We hope you enjoy it and that it uplifts you.”

We’re all over the places this week and our next stop? Ukraine. We’re going with Jinger and their release for ‘Noah’. This is the fifth single off their upcoming release, ‘Marco’.

On the track, Eugene Abdukhanov (bass) has said this on the track.

“Tatiana wrote ‘Noah’ from the point of view of what if he did not succeed in perpetuating life on Earth? Looks like we might find out sooner than we think! Times are scarier, tougher, and stranger than ever. Our/your livelihood and everything we know and cherish are on the verge being swept away by a storm like nothing we’ve faced before. Will we have our own modern day Ark? Will we manage to jump on board in time or has it already set sail? What will be left over after it’s all said and done? These questions are torturing all of us right now and the future is disturbingly uncertain. But we will survive and will get through this, like we did during so many dark times before. Together. Strong and revitalised with a much better understanding of what we are.”

Now for some pounding drummer, fantastic vocals and the best beats. This is Texans metallers Kingdom Collapse who reach new heights with ‘Uprise’.

Jonathan Norris on the track says:

“We’re excited to release the new single at this time with everything going on in the world. With what we’ve all endured globally with the recent pandemic, this is an anthem assuring the fact that we will not only recover but we will rise even stronger.”

Keeping in the same country for the penultimate band on this weeks list is Ded. They’re an Arizona outfit who’ve released ‘A Mannequin Idol (LUllaby)’ which is the latest single coming off of the band’s recently released EP, ‘Mannequin Eyes’.

On the track, Joe Cotela talked to ABC Audio.

“[The song is] kind of taking a shot at the music industry,” Cotela explains. “[It’s about] the way consumers consume, and questioning why they consume what they do, why they identify with certain things, [and] hopefully posing those questions for people to think about themselves.”

And lastly today we have the almighty Asking Alexandria.

The band released their latest record, ‘Like A Gouse On Fire’ today via Sumerian Records but earlier this week to hype up the release, they put together a video together during where they shot everyone individually due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The track they released? ‘House On Fire’.

Check out the video below.

And that’s it for another week of the music video roundup! Be sure to check back next week for another look at the latest music video releases from the best bands around and who knows? Maybe you’ll find your new favourite band on that list.

Live Review: Holding Absence @ The Key Club, Leeds

Date: 23/03/19

Support:  The Lunar Process, The Nightmares, Luke Rainsford

It has certainly been a long long wait for Holding Absence to bring out their debut record but it’s absolutely moving, haunting and powerful to cement them as ones to watch in 2019 as they consolidate their place as one of the UK’s finest musical heavy exports. With that debut record released into the world, the Welsh up and comers (signed to the phenomenal Sharptone Records) make their way up and down the country on what could be their most important tour ever. Tonight they hit up Leeds and from what I’ve seen in recent memory, it’s a place which could make or break some bands.

The Lunar Process opened things for the night but honestly, it did take a while for people to come in because I think final soundchecks may have been slightly delayed. nevertheless, this was a band who immediately ripped into the audience with sheer force and never slowed down for anything when they played. To see that they’re just opening for Holding Absence is a shame because this is a band I want to hear more of and their stage presence and their performance encapsulates them years ahead of their time and I wouldn’t be surprised if big things would come their way soon. Additionally, I had no knowledge this band would be playing on the night either but I’m so happy to see Holding Absence reaching out to bands of this calibre because it was a welcomed surprise.

Now, The Nightmares seemed as if all they had going for them was the atmosphere of their performance. There were some good reactions to a few of their tracks but I do have to question why they played straight after a heavy hitting set from The Lunar Process. This doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy what they performed, rather I thought it was a welcomed change from the usual hardcore band supports I’ve seen of late and its this diversity which should be becoming to shows on all tours. Namely, their gothic nature is something which has been missed from shows I’ve been to and would love to see more of in the future where they can only excel.

Next to take up the reigns was Luke Rainsford. The wait to see this lad again, this time with a full band was truly worth it. There was some anticipation from the crowd for his set and his reception was quite shocking even to him, as I had a quick chat with the musician after the show. Here though, there is more diversity because Luke Rainsford is quite unlike any of the shows on the rest of the tour bill. This is probably the best thing about Luke because he’s not conforming to any norms or expectations that he has to be heavy but his songs cut deeper than most and thinking quickly to ‘Frame’ and ‘Home Safe’ these are some of the best examples of his work. What he delivered though was a full energetic set with some assistance from the audience, just made them love his music even more. Luke Rainsford is a one of a kind artist in the scene right now and performances such as this just drive us in more to hear his voice.

Before I say anything about Holding Absence, I do have to say I’ve only ever caught a glimpse of them live before their Leeds date and to say they were enjoyable would just be an insult. Their debut self-titled record is one which is tipped to be a favourite of 2019 but when seen live, their tracks just emphasise who they truly are. Up and comers? Yes. Ones to watch?  Absolutely. But if asked that their record would do great things for them, I’d have to answer unquestionably. This is because they’re a band who come up possibly once in a decade, possibly similar to their Welsh counterparts Dream State who are fighting to be heard and it’s this record which will make or break them.

From start to finish, their set was a heart-pounding, heavy hitting and mesmerising performance, the best I’ve seen of 2019 and to cap off what is a potential best show for myself as well. From ‘Perish’ to ‘Monochrome’ to their closing track Penance, they might have well have announced they’re going to stay for a while and don’t expect anything less than the best from us because it’s very rare you see and hear about these shows because I found when I first started listening to Holding Absence and I still hear them as one of the most inspiring bands because of the way they conduct themselves, I’ve never seen such an in sync group of people whom just acts as if they’re moving as one when on stage.

With their trademark track of Monochrome, this is one of the most pulsating trademarks of their body of work and Lucas Woodman (Vocals) is mesmerising to see as he commands the crowd with his lyrics. One thing is for certain though, and that’s their reign on the scene is going to come, hopefully soon.

I do have to be truthful for this part and say there was a bit of disappointment where there were some technical difficulties in the Keyboards which meant (as far as I can tell) from a setlist perspective that Marigold had to be cut from the set where the wondering fans just wanted them to continue with it all. It is a disappointment to see an error such as this cast a shadow over a perfect set but straight after, the band kept calm and carried on with ‘Like A Shadow’, much to the audience’s approval. For their set to end as it did, I’m sure it’ll be rectified in the near future for when they return, they’ll be back in full force with their Yorkshire leigon waiting for them to return.

Rating: 7/10
